Cowboys cut captains to four as Schottenheimer ends weekly designations

FRISCO - Brian Schottenheimer walked to the podium Thursday at The Star with Week 1 against the New York Giants already on the calendar and delivered a structural change inside the Dallas Cowboys locker room: no more weekly captains, and only four season-long patches instead of the six the club issued in 2025.

The coach said the designations came entirely from a player vote. Quarterback Dak Prescott will wear the offense patch. Defensive tackles Quinnen Williams and Kenny Clark will share defense. Kicker Brandon Aubrey continues as the special-teams captain.

"It was all player voting," Schottenheimer said, according to DallasCowboys.com. "And that's what makes it such an awesome, awesome and incredible designation, that you get voted on by the players and your peers and brothers. There are a lot of other guys that got a number of votes, but those guys were clearly the four highest, and that spoke volumes to me from the numbers."

Two on defense, one each elsewhere

Last season Dallas split captains evenly - two on offense, two on defense and two on special teams. This year's alignment tilts toward the defensive line, reflecting how quickly Williams and Clark have moved into the room's center of gravity after arriving via trade.

Clark came over from Green Bay in the 2025 deal that sent Micah Parsons north. Williams arrived from the New York Jets in November. DallasCowboys.com noted both also sit on the club's leadership council, a separate feedback group Schottenheimer has used alongside the captain patches.

NBC Sports reported that Schottenheimer singled out Williams' influence on younger defenders. "From the minute he got here, he's been about one thing, and it's winning," the coach said of Williams. "He's never won in the NFL and the leadership is real, the talent is incredible, but every decision that guy makes is based on what's best for us winning.

I love that about him, and it's infectious."

Prescott and Aubrey return as captains after carrying patches in 2025. Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, who was among last year's six, is not among the four this season - a result Schottenheimer framed as vote totals rather than a demotion.

Vote totals over weekly rotations

Ending weekly captains removes a rotation that often circulated recognition game to game. Schottenheimer's second-year approach concentrates formal leadership on a smaller group while keeping the broader leadership council intact for day-to-day feedback.

The timing matters at The Star. Dallas is in its final break before Giants week, with the regular-season opener set for Sept. 13 in New York.

Captains announced from Frisco will be the ones walking out for the coin toss when that week arrives, and the defensive tilt puts two interior linemen - both acquired in high-profile trades - in that ceremonial and practical role from the jump.

DallasCowboys.com stressed that players who were captains in 2025 and are not among the four this year were not being punished; the coach said the ballot produced a clear top four. That leaves Prescott as the offensive voice, Aubrey as the special-teams constant, and Williams and Clark as the defensive pair charged with setting tone on a unit rebuilt around the interior.

For a franchise still chasing a long championship drought, the vote is an early public signal of who the locker room trusts heading into September. The next test is not another ballot. It is Week 1 against the Giants, when those four patches meet a live opponent for the first time.
