The Dallas Cowboys agreed to terms on a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers for offensive tackle Broderick Jones, adding a former first-rounder hours before the 53-man deadline.
DallasCowboys.com posted the announcement Saturday evening from Frisco. Per multiple reports including NFL Media, the Cowboys sent third- and sixth-round picks in exchange for Jones and a fourth-round pick. Two people familiar with the deal told The Dallas Morning News the swap is 2027 picks: a third and sixth to Pittsburgh for Jones and a 2027 fourth.
ESPN, from a Pittsburgh dateline, matched that package but wrote that Dallas announced the trade Sunday, a day after the club's Saturday post.
Starter mileage, swing role
Jones, taken 14th overall by Pittsburgh in 2023, has played 45 games with 38 starts over three seasons. Last year he took all 603 of his snaps at left tackle; the two seasons before that, most of his work was on the right. At 25, he gives Dallas a swing-tackle option who may eventually compete for a starting job.
His 2025 season ended with a neck injury. DallasCowboys.com and the Morning News place it in Week 12; ESPN reports Week 11 against the Chicago Bears and spinal fusion surgery. Cleared to practice in July, about eight months after surgery, he logged 142 snaps across Pittsburgh's three preseason games at both tackle spots.
ESPN reported the Steelers declined his fifth-year option, drafted tackle Max Iheanachor in the first round in 2026, and moved 2024 first-rounder Troy Fautanu from right tackle to left.
Steelers coach Mike McCarthy said early in camp that after a medical clearance, "you can't just go to a hundred miles an hour." Jones said in July: "I'm still working through it. I wouldn't say I'm where I want to be at. Just trying to get back in shape and putting the weight back on in the right places."
Crowding the edges
The tackle room now lists Jones, Tyler Guyton, Terence Steele, Nate Thomas, Drew Shelton and Marcellus Johnson. Guyton-Thomas competition at left tackle was suspended a week into camp. Thomas moved to right tackle after the first preseason game; Shelton shifted from right to left with the second team. Both drew holding flags in Friday's loss to the Saints.
Asked whether the swing tackle was already on the roster, head coach Brian Schottenheimer said: "I think we feel good about our tackle group. I think I want to see the film, see how Nate did. Nate and Drew have been competing, but I want to see the film.
