Caleb Downs got his first camp interception Tuesday night at the Ford Center, picking Dak Prescott on a red-zone throw at the back of the end zone, then punting the football.

Cowboys Night on Wednesday is the second and last open practice at The Star, and it is in pads. The club works 6 to 8 p.m. CT, live on TXA 21 and streamed on DallasCowboys.com, Cowboys Mobile and Cowboys Now, with Bill Jones and the team site's reporters on the call. It is the last public padded look before the New Orleans Saints on Friday at AT&T Stadium.

Tuesday at the Ford Center

DallasCowboys.com's Practice Points put Downs' interception at the center of a shells session. AtoZ Sports' film of the snap had the rookie lined up in the nickel on CeeDee Lamb, passing him off to safety Jalen Thompson, then jumping a throw intended for Ryan Flournoy while DaRon Bland was already in coverage. Downs punted the ball afterward. Sports Illustrated, citing DallasCowboys.com reporter Tommy Yarrish, had that punt at about 40 yards. AtoZ, citing people in the building, put it closer to 50.

Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown spoke to DallasCowboys.com on Wednesday morning.

"He's a baller," Overshown said. "Seeing him make a play like that, that's going to be common."

George Pickens toed both feet in on a deep corner from Prescott, then won a contested catch with Cobie Durant on him. In the red zone he was flagged for offensive pass interference on a score and, Practice Points noted, jokingly tucked the official's flag into his own pocket.

Tight end Brevyn Spann-Ford caught a touchdown going to the ground on a throw Prescott had to invent under pressure. Sports Illustrated said he adjusted to a throw behind him. Prescott also ran for two red-zone scores, beating the defense on scrambles.

Caelen Carson broke up two passes, one of them on Prescott that erased a first down on a free play. Nick Eatman of DallasCowboys.com wrote that cornerback Ameer Speed, who added a breakup, is in the mix for a last corner spot. Yarrish logged Brandon Aubrey 6-for-6 in a field-goal period from 31, 33, 37, 42, 47 and 54 yards.

The absences that still matter

Sports Illustrated reported no new injuries from Tuesday. The sit-outs still shape what Wednesday's pads can show, and what Friday might not.

Yarrish's list, via SI, was defensive tackle Jonathan Bullard, safety Julius Wood, tight ends Michael Trigg and DJ Rogers, and offensive lineman Ajani Cornelius. Bullard has been limited by groin and abdomen trouble and has not played in either preseason game; SI said Week 1 could be in doubt if he does not return soon. Wood is in concussion protocol after Saturday against Arizona. Trigg has a toe injury from preseason Week 1, and coach Brian Schottenheimer would not say he will play Friday. Rogers has a knee injury from last week. Cornelius is the new name on the sheet: knee soreness, the Dallas Morning News' Calvin Watkins reported, after he started both exhibitions.

Dallas signed tight end Mitch Van Vooren on Monday with Trigg and Rogers out.

Pads on Wednesday are the last chance for bubble players to work in public before the Saints. Kickoff Friday is 7 p.m. CT at AT&T Stadium. NFL clubs then have to get to 53 players by 6 p.m. ET on Sunday.
