FC Dallas Finds Its Opening in the Air, Then Protects It

The decisive moment at Toyota Stadium required two players, one corner and a little elevation. Joaquín Valiente sent in the delivery, Osaze Urhoghide met it from the center of the box and FC Dallas beat Los Angeles Football Club 1-0 on Saturday night.

For Frisco’s MLS club, the sequence was a particularly useful bit of arithmetic. Dallas won its first corner in the 33rd minute, and Valiente’s cross found Urhoghide moments later. The defender sent his header toward the top-right corner, beating Hugo Lloris and giving Dallas the lead in the 34th minute.

Urhoghide’s 2026 goal total reached two, matching the career high he set last season. More broadly, FC Dallas now has nine headed goals this season, second-most in MLS, while four of its goals have come from corner kicks. Those numbers do not make every dead ball a scoring opportunity, and they certainly do not make a 1-0 lead comfortable.

They do show that Dallas has a dependable route to danger when the service is accurate and the target attacks the delivery properly.

Valiente’s role deserves equal billing. The assist was his 13th of the season, and Dallas is now 9-0-1 in matches in which he records one. That is a striking result without turning it into a claim about one midfielder carrying the entire attack. His corner produced the night’s only goal, and Urhoghide finished it.

The rest of the match was much less orderly. Los Angeles Football Club had slightly more possession, 51.6% to Dallas’ 48.4%, and the shot count was close: 11 for LAFC, 13 for Dallas. The more important distinction was modest as well. Dallas put four shots on target and LAFC put three, hardly the statistical profile of a side cruising toward a routine home victory.

The danger arrived early in the second half. In the 49th minute, Jeremy Ebobisse got a close-range attempt after Armindo Sieb’s headed pass, but Jonathan Sirois saved it in the top center of the goal. That early chance showed how quickly LAFC could threaten the lead after halftime.

Christian Cappis then missed from the right side of the box in the 54th minute, Santiago Moreno sent a left-side effort too high a minute later, and Shaq Moore had a shot blocked in the 69th. Dallas continued to create, but its cushion remained exactly one goal wide.

Then came the match’s most delicate official intervention. Sieb appeared to score in the 73rd minute, but a video review overturned the goal. The no-goal decision in the 74th minute preserved Dallas’s advantage. It also demonstrated how precarious the result remained: LAFC had put the ball in the net, and Dallas needed the review to keep its lead.

The closing stretch offered a fair counterweight to any suggestion that the home side simply shut the door. LAFC had another blocked effort from Sieb in the 80th minute, and Sergi Palencia forced Sirois into a save in the third minute of stoppage time. Sirois finished with three saves and a shutout in his 100th MLS regular-season match.

His late stop was the final piece of protection behind a lead that had begun with a set play.

Dallas also kept looking forward instead of merely absorbing pressure. Sebastien Ibeagha tested Lloris with a shot in the 78th minute, Patrickson Delgado had an effort blocked in the 85th, and Moore drew another save in the 89th.

Those chances did not add insurance, but they matter to the shape of the win: FC Dallas had to defend carefully without surrendering the possibility of a second goal.

The result extended Dallas’ unbeaten run to six matches and moved the club to second in the Western Conference, according to FC Dallas. That position owes something to an attacking contribution from a defender. Urhoghide supplied the finish when Dallas won its first corner.

By the time Palencia tested Sirois in stoppage time, that header had been standing alone on the scoreboard for about an hour.
