FC Dallas did its part at Toyota Stadium. The Galaxy and San Jose supplied the rest. Wednesday’s 1-0 win over Seattle, Portland’s 2-0 defeat in Los Angeles and Real Salt Lake’s 1-1 draw combined to secure Dallas a place in the 2026 MLS Cup playoffs.

The achievement was built around a match Dallas had to manage rather than dominate. Kaick provided the breakthrough in the 63rd minute, turning a corner sequence into the only goal. Osaze Urhoghide directed a headed pass toward Kaick, who struck a right-footed shot from the middle of the box into the upper-left corner.

It was Kaick’s fourth goal of the season, the most among Dallas midfielders and third-most on the team.

That finish gave Dallas the margin its goalkeeper needed to protect. Seattle finished with 57.2% possession, 11 corners and seven shots on target. Dallas had 15 total attempts but only three on frame. Possession is not a verdict by itself, yet this distribution accurately described the evening: Seattle had more of the ball, while Dallas made the decisive play and protected its lead.

Daniel made seven saves, with six of them arriving while the match was still scoreless. That is why Kaick’s goal changed the job instead of merely reducing a deficit. Dallas then had to protect a lead, and Daniel’s stop on Snyder Brunell in the 75th minute kept Seattle from undoing the breakthrough.

Seattle continued to threaten after falling behind. Paul Arriola missed in the 66th minute, Jordan Morris sent an attempt wide in the 69th, and Rusnák had a shot blocked in added time. Dallas had earned an advantage, not permission to stop defending. The playoff scenario depended on completing the win.

That does not make the victory flimsy. Dallas finished with 30 clearances and nine interceptions, numbers that fit a match in which the Sounders repeatedly reached the attacking end but could not turn territory into an equalizer. Daniel’s seven saves were the obvious headline within the game, while the defenders’ work around Seattle’s crosses and corners provided the less glamorous half of the clean sheet.

A one-goal win can be secured by a goalkeeper, but it is rarely preserved by one player alone.

The result also altered Seattle’s immediate story. The Sounders arrived unbeaten in their previous nine matches, a run comprising four wins and five draws. Dallas stopped that sequence and claimed its first home victory over Seattle since 2022. Those are worthwhile footnotes, though the playoff berth is the achievement that changes the season’s shape.

Dallas entered the night knowing that beating Seattle was only one part of the equation. Portland had to avoid a win against the Galaxy, while Real Salt Lake had to fail to take all three points against San Jose. The Galaxy’s 2-0 result and the 1-1 draw in Utah supplied exactly that combination.

With Dallas winning, the required conditions were complete; the postseason place was no longer a projection.

At 14-7-8 with 50 points, Dallas has also assembled winning records in both its home and away matches, a balance the club had not reached in the same season since 2010. That gives the berth meaningful context without pretending one night establishes what will happen in the playoffs. Dallas has earned its invitation, not a guaranteed route through the bracket.

The next objective is therefore concrete: finish the regular season with stronger performances before postseason play begins. The next opportunity comes Saturday in Houston, in the final Texas Derby of the season. Kaick’s finish delivered the qualification. The remaining matches will determine how forcefully Dallas enters the competition it has now secured.
