Entergy and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group have entered a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on carbon capture and storage technologies. The agreement aims to create a near-term roadmap targeting a 50 percent reduction in overall project costs. This initiative supports Entergy’s objective to provide reliable, affordable, and low-carbon energy to its customers.
The partnership combines Entergy’s operational infrastructure with MHI Group’s power generation capabilities. MHI Group includes Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America and Mitsubishi Power Americas. Together, the entities will focus on integrated gas turbine combined cycle systems paired with carbon dioxide capture solutions. The goal is to accelerate the commercialization of these technologies and improve their economic viability for the broader energy sector.
Entergy’s geographic position offers specific advantages for these projects. The company’s power generation sites are located near the largest existing carbon dioxide pipeline network in the United States. Additionally, the region features subsurface geology considered suitable for the permanent underground storage of captured carbon dioxide.
MHI Group will contribute its M501JAC gas turbines and carbon capture technology to the effort. The companies intend to develop a standardized approach to enhance project economics. This collaboration builds upon a long-standing relationship between Entergy and Mitsubishi Power Americas, which previously included scaling a gas turbine combined cycle program.
Kimberly Cook-Nelson, Entergy’s chief operating officer, described the partnership as a response to customer demand for clean power. She emphasized that scale, strong partnerships, and standardization are critical to success. Cook-Nelson stated that Entergy is dedicated to providing reliable and affordable energy to its communities.
Bill Newsom, president and CEO of Mitsubishi Power Americas, noted that meaningful decarbonization requires partnerships that make technologies commercially viable. He described the collaboration as a commitment to advancing practical solutions that support energy reliability and economic growth. Newsom added that the companies are working to create a repeatable model for integrated gas turbine and carbon capture solutions.
