The Junior PGA Championship reached its 50th edition this week, and it is being played in Frisco.
The championship began Tuesday at Fields Ranch at PGA Frisco and runs through Friday, a four-day, 72-hole event contested by 312 players, split evenly between 156 girls and 156 boys. Entry is open to amateurs who were 18 or younger as of July 31, and players earned their places through PGA Section Championships or by exemption.
A field that has produced the game's biggest names
The list of past competitors is the reason this event carries the weight it does. Tiger Woods, Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Lexi Thompson all played in the Junior PGA Championship before turning professional.
This year's field is led on the girls' side by Zoe Cusack, ranked fifth by the American Junior Golf Association, along with Vidhi Lakhawala at No. 8, Iris Lee at No. 16, Amber Lee at No. 18 and Juliet Oh at No. 19.
The boys' field includes Jaden Soong at No. 10, Rory Asselta at No. 12, Grant DeLorenzo at No. 19 and Chase Bauer at No. 20. Charlie Woods, son of Tiger Woods, is also competing after finishing tied for ninth a year ago.
Twenty-seven players came through the host Northern Texas PGA Section.
How the week is structured
The first two rounds used both the East and West courses at Fields Ranch. A 36-hole cut on Wednesday trimmed the field to the low 60 scorers and ties, and a second cut after Thursday's third round reduces it to the low 30 and ties.
The final two rounds are played exclusively on Fields Ranch East, the course that will host the PGA Championship in 2027 and again in 2034. For the juniors still standing, that means finishing a national championship on the same ground the world's best players will compete on next year.
