Major League Soccer's showcase match arrives Wednesday, when the league's All-Stars face a squad of Liga MX All-Stars at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m.
The fixture continues the format that pits the two North American leagues against one another rather than staging an intra-league exhibition, and it lands in the middle of a compressed MLS calendar. The league paused from late May through mid-July for the World Cup, which was hosted across North America, and restarted on July 16 with a slate of rivalry matches.
Charlotte FC head coach Dean Smith selected the MLS side on his home ground. The 29-man roster was assembled three ways: supporters voted in 11 players, Smith added 12 of his own selections, and MLS commissioner Don Garber made two picks.
Two of the league's highest-profile signings headline the group. Son Heung-min and Thomas Muller are both on the roster, alongside players including Toronto FC's Richie Laryea. Three Vancouver Whitecaps were named.
The roster shifted in the days before the match. Hugo Cuypers, Rodrigo De Paul, Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Lionel Messi were all named initially and were later replaced for various reasons. Messi and De Paul were excused for rest.
Liga MX named 24 players to its side. Toluca, fresh from winning the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup, has four representatives. Cruz Azul leads all clubs with five players, and CF Pachuca also has four.
The match is the centerpiece of a week of events in Charlotte built around the game, with a fan festival and related programming surrounding it.
The MLS versus Liga MX format reflects how closely the two leagues now operate. Players move between them regularly, the clubs meet in continental competition, and Liga MX sides have historically held an edge in those meetings, which gives the exhibition more competitive edge than the format might suggest.
