James Talarico initiated his "The People vs. Ken Paxton Tour" on Wednesday in Houston, marking the first stop of a multi-city campaign strategy. The event followed Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s Tuesday night acceptance speech, where Paxton defeated incumbent John Cornyn to secure the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate seat. During that speech, Paxton referred to Talarico using several derogatory nicknames, including "Tofu Talarico" and "James Tala-freako."
Talarico addressed these insults by offering "Talafreako" t-shirts on his campaign website and delivering sharp counterattacks at the Houston rally. He contrast his four terms in the Texas House of Representatives with what he described as Paxton’s criminal record, labeling the attorney general the most corrupt politician in the nation. Talarico also characterized the upcoming contest as a spiritual struggle between service and greed.
SMU political science professor Matthew Wilson described the race as a potential "perfect storm" for Democrats, citing Paxton’s 2023 impeachment and President Trump’s low approval ratings. Wilson suggested these factors could provide Democrats with their best statewide opportunity in decades. Talarico’s tour will continue through Nacogdoches, San Antonio, Leander, and Plano over the next four days. Paxton’s own campaign schedule has not yet been announced.
