Allen rising junior Maya Ogbogu is preparing for a busy period that includes representing the United States at the FIVB Girls U17 World Championships in Chile from Aug. 6-16. This international opportunity follows her participation with the first-ever U.S. girls U17 national team in Costa Rica last fall.

Ogbogu described the previous trip as a significant learning experience, noting the differences in playing styles among international teams. She expressed excitement about returning to the global stage with her teammates, stating that the upcoming tournament is a primary focus for her and her peers.

Before departing for Chile, Ogbogu is competing with her Texas Advantage Volleyball club team in Indianapolis. The USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championships began on June 25 and continue through Friday. This club competition occurs shortly after she finalized her college decision, making a verbal commitment to play for Texas A&M.

Ranked as the top overall prospect in the country for the Class of 2018 by PrepDig, Ogbogu considered several programs, including Texas and Stanford, before choosing the Aggies. She noted that college programs could not contact her directly until June 15 following her sophomore year. She committed on June 16, describing the process as overwhelming but brief after visiting campuses such as SMU, UT, and A&M.

Ogbogu’s high school career at Allen has been marked by rapid development. As a freshman in 2024, she was named District 6-6A newcomer of the year after helping the Lady Eagles reach the state semifinals. During her sophomore season, she was named 6-6A hitter of the year, recording 444 kills, a .334 hitting percentage, 59 blocks, 234 digs, 18 aces, and 425 receptions. Allen finished that season with a 37-7 record and shared the district championship.

Her absence from Allen’s playoff run last season was due to the NORCECA U17 Continental Championship in Costa Rica, which took place from Nov. 4-9. Ogbogu expressed disappointment at missing the team’s postseason efforts, though she acknowledged the squad’s strong performance.

Allen is located about 9 miles east of Frisco. Ogbogu stated she is currently working on shot placement, serve-receive, and strength training as she prepares for her junior year. Further details regarding her specific role on the national team roster were not provided.
