The Bears have struggled defensively in recent years, allowing an average of 30.8 points and over 399.9 yards per game since 2023, prompting the need for a fresh approach.
Klanderman's defensive strategy employs a 3-3-5 formation, which emphasizes versatility and aims to confuse opposing quarterbacks, compelling them to make quick decisions. This setup includes three defensive linemen to absorb blocks, thereby freeing up linebackers to pursue the ball.
The new defensive scheme is expected to enhance Baylor's performance in critical situations, particularly in red-zone defense and third-down stops. Klanderman's defenses at Kansas State were known for their effectiveness in these areas, and he has brought in talent through the transfer portal to improve the Bears' defensive capabilities.
Positional flexibility is another hallmark of Klanderman's system, which utilizes hybrid safeties and linebackers to effectively counter the spread offenses prevalent in the Big 12.
