Tommy Castellanos has produced three touchdowns for Texas Tech this season, but his role remains unsettled after two games. The veteran quarterback has been used in select situations alongside starter Will Hammond, with results that have varied from productive plays to turnovers.
Castellanos entered against Houston last Friday and threw an interception on the opening play while attempting to send the ball out of bounds, Red Raiders Wire reported. He later returned to the game in the red zone and scored on a 3-yard run.
Coach Joey McGuire said after the game that Hammond remains Texas Tech’s starting quarterback. McGuire also said the Red Raiders plan to continue using packages for Castellanos.
Castellanos arrived late in preseason camp as an emergency backup after Texas Tech added him following the close of the transfer portal and the conclusion of Brendan Sorsby’s situation. Hammond is still recovering from a torn ACL, according to the report.
