The Dallas Cowboys have made some challenging roster decisions, particularly at the running back position, where they have opted to keep Javonte Williams, Malik Davis, and Hunter Luepke. As a result, they have released 2025 draft picks Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah.

Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer acknowledged the difficulty of these choices, noting that both Blue and Mafah were valued players who were drafted for their potential. He emphasized the performance of Malik Davis, who has consistently proven his worth to the team. Schottenheimer mentioned that Blue and Mafah might reach out to Davis for guidance as they navigate their current situation.

In a move to bolster their roster, the Cowboys claimed running back Emari Demercado off waivers from Kansas City. Schottenheimer highlighted Demercado's versatility, particularly his ability to contribute on special teams, as a key factor in the decision to acquire him. Additionally, offensive coordinator Klayton Adams' previous experience with Demercado during their time in Arizona played a role in this acquisition.

Regarding the possibility of bringing Blue or Mafah back to the practice squad, Schottenheimer was non-committal, stating that there were no guarantees for either player. He expressed honesty in communicating the uncertainty of their return.

The Cowboys have signed 13 players to their practice squad, which includes running back Israel Abanikanda. An NFL team can have up to 16 players on the practice squad, and the Cowboys have an exemption for one additional player due to the International Player Pathway program, which includes defensive tackle Dayo Odeleye.

Schottenheimer concluded by expressing confidence in the current running back group, stating that they aim to build a competitive roster that aligns with their philosophy of daily competition. He mentioned that there are many capable players available, reinforcing the team's commitment to strengthening their running back room as they finalize their roster decisions.
