The Dallas Cowboys have released running back Jaydon Blue, formerly a fifth-round pick from the University of Texas, as they move away from their "Thunder and Lightning" running back concept. Blue, who had been viewed as a potential complementary back, was quickly signed by the Philadelphia Eagles to join their practice squad.

Blue's time with the Cowboys was marked by struggles with maturity, which limited his opportunities during his rookie season. Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer indicated that there was little chance of Blue returning to the team's practice squad, further solidifying his departure.

In a related move, the Cowboys have signed Emari Demercado, a former standout with the Arizona Cardinals, to bolster their running back group. Demercado, who stands at 5 feet 11 inches and weighs 215 pounds, brings experience and versatility to the offense, having averaged an impressive 6.5 yards per carry during his time in Arizona.

Demercado's performance caught the attention of Cowboys offensive coordinator Klayton Adams, who previously coached him. In his rookie season, Demercado averaged 4.9 yards per carry, and he significantly improved to 9.3 yards per attempt in 2024. Over three seasons with the Cardinals, he accumulated 819 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 126 carries.

The Cowboys' running back lineup now includes Malik Davis as the second option and Hunter Luepke as a fullback. Israel Abanikanda has also been recalled to the practice squad, while the future of second-year back Phil Mafah remains uncertain. The Cowboys will be watching to see how Blue performs with the Eagles, as they hope he does not reach his potential in a rival uniform.

The dynamics of the NFL often lead to situations where one team's discarded player becomes another's asset, exemplified by the recent moves involving Blue and Demercado.
