As the Dallas Cowboys prepare for the 2026 season, they are making significant changes to their defense under new coordinator Christian Parker. The team aims to improve upon last year's performance, which saw them ranked as the worst defense in the NFL, allowing a total of 511 points.

The safety position has undergone a notable transformation, with only Malik Hooker and Markquese Bell returning from the previous season. The Cowboys have invested heavily in this area, signing Jalen Thompson as their most expensive free agent in over a decade and adding PJ Locke, who has prior experience with Parker.

They also selected Caleb Downs with the No. 11 pick in the draft, indicating their commitment to strengthening the safety unit.

Despite these changes, Markquese Bell's status on the team has been uncertain, particularly after he was arrested in April on charges of possession of a controlled substance and marijuana. This incident has raised questions about his future with the Cowboys, especially given the team's significant investment in new safeties.

In a recent preseason game against the Cardinals, Bell was a healthy scratch, which is common for veterans expected to make the final roster. Sports commentator Zach Wolchuk noted that Bell's absence from the game might suggest he is secure in his position, but the Cowboys still face tough decisions regarding their safety lineup.

Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News speculated that the Cowboys might keep five safeties on their final roster, including Bell. He highlighted Bell's physicality during training camp and his adaptability in previous roles, suggesting that he could play a more significant part in the team's new defensive scheme.

Further details about Bell's future with the team remain unclear as the Cowboys finalize their roster decisions ahead of the season.
