Butler, who had previously navigated through two spring football leagues before joining the Cowboys in 2023, expressed his disappointment and pride following the announcement of his release.
In a social media post, Butler highlighted his performance during his time with the Cowboys, stating, "My entire time with the Cowboys I've never given up a single touchdown preseason or regular season or a pass over 20 yards." He also reflected on his journey back to football after a four-year hiatus, emphasizing his gratitude for the team.
During the preseason, Butler showcased his skills with six tackles and proved to be a strong defensive player in the three games he participated in. Over the past three seasons, he played in six games, recording 26 tackles, five pass deflections, and one sack. However, he missed the entire 2023 season due to an ACL injury sustained in 2024, which limited his playtime in 2025.
Despite his solid performance, Butler faced stiff competition at the cornerback position, which ultimately led to his release. The Cowboys have not ruled out the possibility of bringing him back for their practice squad, as he has been a reliable depth player when on the field.
As the Cowboys continue to evaluate their roster, it remains uncertain whether another NFL team will claim Butler or if he will return to the Cowboys in a different capacity. The organization is still actively seeking options to enhance their roster as they aim for a Super Bowl victory in 2026.
