Earlier on the same day, the Cowboys claimed running back Emari Demercado off waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs, which necessitated Milton's release to accommodate Demercado on the 53-man roster.
During the 2026 preseason, Milton played in three games, completing 29 of 43 passes for a total of 378 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. Additionally, he rushed 12 times for 14 yards and scored one rushing touchdown.
Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer expressed confidence in both Milton and Howell as viable backup options. He recalled a conversation with Milton that highlighted his self-assurance in his abilities. Schottenheimer noted the challenges of mastering the team's complex offensive system, which requires significant understanding from quarterbacks.
Milton commented on his comfort level with the Cowboys' offense, stating that he felt more at ease after a full season and a second training camp. He emphasized the importance of understanding the playbook and executing plays correctly.
