The Dallas Cowboys are currently evaluating their quarterback situation as they prepare for roster cuts ahead of the NFL deadline on August 30. The team is in the midst of a competitive battle for the backup quarterback position behind Dak Prescott, with Sam Howell and Joe Milton both showcasing their skills during the preseason.

Reports indicate that Howell, who has started 18 of his 20 NFL games, may be released in favor of Milton, who has reportedly performed well in recent preseason games. USA Today's Ben Grimaldi suggests that Howell's position on the roster is precarious, stating that while Howell had an early advantage, Milton's strong performances have shifted the dynamics of the competition.

Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer acknowledged that Howell had been slightly ahead in the competition, but noted that Milton has made significant strides. "If you would just take the training camp competition, it's probably neck and neck, and Sam maybe a little bit ahead," Schottenheimer said. However, he also recognized Milton's impressive outings in recent games.

The decision to keep either two or three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster adds complexity to the situation. Retaining three quarterbacks could necessitate cuts at other positions where the team needs depth. Howell's contract, which is fully guaranteed at $2.5 million for the year, means that the Cowboys would incur that cost even if he is released.

As the final week of training camp unfolds, the Cowboys will need to finalize their decision, potentially influenced by the outcome of their preseason finale against the New Orleans Saints. While some analysts predict the team will keep both Howell and Milton, the competition remains tight, and the final decision is not yet clear.

Further developments are anticipated as the roster deadline approaches, with the Cowboys weighing their options carefully in this critical period of evaluation.
