Dozie Ezukanma, a wide receiver for TCU, was hospitalized for three days with a brain bleed and additional injuries following an alleged incident involving teammate Jacob Fields at the Walsh Athletic Complex on August 13.
The arrest warrant affidavit obtained by the Fort Worth Star Telegram indicates that Fields, dissatisfied with Ezukanma's practice performance, allegedly punched him in the head while he was seated and distracted by his phone. Witnesses reported that after the punch, Fields kicked Ezukanma in the back of the head, rendering him unconscious.
Ezukanma experienced severe headaches and ringing in his ears, prompting his hospitalization. Initial medical evaluations revealed a brain bleed, which necessitated his transfer to the ICU. During his treatment, multiple CT scans indicated that the hematoma had increased in size. He was discharged on August 16, having also sustained a strained AC joint in his shoulder.
Jacob Fields was dismissed from the team on August 18 and subsequently turned himself in to law enforcement, facing charges of aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury. He was released from Tarrant County Jail after posting a $50,000 bond. Following the incident, Fields expressed regret in a text to TCU police, acknowledging his emotional response and offering to pay for Ezukanma's hospital expenses.
TCU head coach Sonny Dykes remarked on the situation, emphasizing that such behavior was uncharacteristic for both Fields and the team. Ezukanma, a graduate of Keller Timber Creek High School in Fort Worth, was anticipated to be a starting wide receiver for the upcoming season, with TCU's next game set against Grambling on September 12.
