BJ Edwards, who previously played for the SMU Mustangs, has announced his commitment to the Oklahoma Sooners. This decision comes as he is granted an extra season of eligibility due to a five-for-five temporary injunction affecting the 2022 recruiting class, as reported by Joe Tipton of On3.
Edwards spent three seasons with SMU after transferring from the University of Tennessee, where he played just 14 games. At SMU, he navigated coaching changes, playing for Rob Lanier in the 2022-2023 season and later for Andy Enfield. Despite facing injuries, his most productive season was last year, where he participated in 28 games, averaging 12.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game.
He also made a significant defensive impact, earning All-Conference defensive team honors in the ACC with averages of 2.4 steals per game in the 2024-2025 season and 2.3 steals in the 2025-2026 season.
Although there was interest from SMU to keep him, Edwards opted to play under head coach Porter Moser in Norman. The Sooners are aiming to strengthen their roster after a 21-16 overall record last season and missing the NCAA Tournament, making Edwards' addition a key enhancement for the upcoming winter season.
