Dallas Cowboys outside linebacker Marist Liufau is set to undergo surgery for a fractured forearm and is expected to miss several weeks, as confirmed by head coach Brian Schottenheimer. The injury occurred during Friday's preseason game against the New Orleans Saints when Liufau was making a tackle in the first quarter.

Schottenheimer praised Liufau's competitive spirit, stating, "What a great competitor. He'll be back." Liufau, who was drafted in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft from Notre Dame, has participated in all 34 games for the Cowboys over the past two seasons.

As he enters his third season, Liufau transitioned from inside linebacker to outside linebacker under the guidance of defensive coordinator Christian Parker. He expressed gratitude for the support he has received from teammates and coaches during this adjustment period.

Last season, Liufau saw a notable increase in his special teams involvement, playing 75% of the snaps compared to 35% in his rookie year. He understands the significance of special teams in securing roster spots, emphasizing the need to put aside personal pride for the team's success.

Schottenheimer acknowledged Liufau's contributions to special teams, noting, "Losing Marist as a football player is tough. Unfortunately, it's part of the business." He indicated that the team would proceed with surgery promptly and that they would adapt to the situation, highlighting Liufau's critical role in all four special teams phases.

With the Cowboys facing roster decisions in the coming days, Liufau's injury may influence their strategy. NFL teams can designate up to two players for return, but they must miss at least the first four weeks of the season. It remains unclear how Liufau's recovery timeline will affect these decisions, particularly given the Cowboys' other injury concerns.
