The Dallas Cowboys signed running back Israel Abanikanda from the practice squad after Malik Davis sustained a hip injury that will require surgery. Abanikanda is expected to become the team’s third running back.
Davis had held the No. 2 spot behind Javonte Williams through training camp while competing with second-year running back Jaydon Blue. Dallas waived Blue at the end of the preseason and then claimed Emari Demercado from Kansas City. Demercado is set to work behind Williams in the season opener at the New York Giants. Fullback Hunter Luepke also remains on the roster.
A projection for the Dallas-New York matchup listed the over-under at 48.5 points. Nick Harris picked Dallas to win and predicted the game would finish below that total, citing the Cowboys’ experience, the opening week and possible weather conditions.
Coach Brian Schottenheimer said linebacker DeMarvion Overshown will handle much of the responsibility for relaying defensive calls through the communication helmet. Schottenheimer also said Dallas has other players prepared for the assignment because different defensive packages could require changes.
The Cowboys are also considering their options along the offensive line, according to the source. Veteran tackle D.J. Humphries became available after Washington released him. Humphries was selected 24th overall by Arizona in 2015, became a full-time starter in 2016 and dealt with injuries during his time with the Cardinals through 2023.
Another report examined receiver Ryan Flournoy’s contract and its potential flexibility for Dallas in 2027. His deal includes a $1.5 million base salary, a $500,000 roster bonus and $1.25 million in remaining signing-bonus proration.
