Southern Methodist University’s head volleyball coach, Sam Erger, has been suspended for two games due to a violation related to impermissible communication, according to a spokesperson from the university. This self-imposed suspension by SMU Athletics occurred on August 29 and 30.
During Erger's absence, the Mustangs secured victories against Colorado State and UC Davis. The team won the match against Colorado State in four sets, with sophomore outside hitter Suli Davis achieving an impressive double-double, recording 22 kills and 14 digs. They also triumphed over UC Davis in a five-set match.
Erger returned to coach the team on September 2 against TCU, where the Mustangs faced a loss in five sets. In that match, Davis again led the team, contributing 15 kills, while freshman Bojana Ambulija made a notable debut with 13 kills.
Erger has been at the helm of the SMU volleyball program since February 2022, leading the team to three NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Sweet Sixteen finish in 2025. Last season, the Mustangs achieved a record-tying 27 wins.
Next, the Mustangs are scheduled to play against the University of San Diego, with the match available for streaming on ESPN+. Details regarding the specifics of the communication violation remain undisclosed due to NCAA confidentiality regulations.
