The Houston Texans have announced that they will not continue contract negotiations with quarterback C.J. Stroud once the regular season begins. General manager Nick Caserio stated that if an agreement is not reached before the team's opener against Buffalo on September 13, discussions will be halted until the next offseason.
Stroud, who was selected second overall in the 2023 draft, has already had his fifth-year option picked up, securing his contract with the team through 2027. Caserio had previously indicated that there was a possibility for an extension before the season, but no deal is currently in sight.
At 24 years old, Stroud has a record of 28-18 and has led the Texans to the playoffs in each of his first three seasons. He was named the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2023 and achieved a career-high completion rate of 64% in 2025, helping the team to a 12-5 record and a divisional playoff appearance.
However, Stroud faced challenges in the postseason, notably throwing five interceptions in a 28-16 loss to New England. Further details regarding the potential for future negotiations have not yet been disclosed.
