The Dallas Cowboys faced the challenging task of finalizing their roster to meet the NFL's 53-player deadline this weekend, resulting in several notable cuts. Among those waived were second-year running back Jaydon Blue and former second-round pick Sam Williams. In a surprising move, the team also released quarterback Joe Milton III, despite his strong performance during the preseason.
Following these cuts, the Cowboys claimed running back Emari Demercado off waivers and signed offensive tackle Wanya Morris. The team retained many of the released players by adding them to their practice squad, which now includes a mix of rookies and veterans.
The initial practice squad consists of Israel Abanikanda (RB), Jordan Hudson (WR), Anthony Smith (WR), Michael Trigg (TE), Mitch Van Vooren, Marcellus Johnson (OT), Wanya Morris (OT), Nick Leverett (G/C), Tommy Dunn (DT), Elijah Garcia (DT), Adedayo Odeleye (DT), Isaiah Land (EDGE), Justin Barron (LB), Curtis Robinson (LB), Derion Kendrick (CB), and Reddy Steward (CB).
Several players stood out during the preseason, including wide receiver Jordan Hudson, who made impressive catches, and defensive tackle Tommy Dunn, recognized for his effective run defense. Linebacker Justin Barron, a converted safety, excelled in coverage, while Curtis Robinson contributed significantly on special teams. Reddy Steward, known for his consistency in the defensive backfield, also showed promise.
In addition to the players retained, some Cowboys cuts found new opportunities with other teams. Julius Wood was claimed by the Miami Dolphins after a strong preseason, while guard Trevor Keegan signed with the Minnesota Vikings. Sam Williams, who recorded 8.5 sacks in his first two seasons, joined the Cleveland Browns after struggling to regain form post-ACL surgery.
