Hooker set for forearm surgery as Cowboys reshuffle safety snaps

Malik Hooker's season opener ended with more than a short exit. Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said Monday that the safety's forearm fracture is confirmed and that Hooker will undergo surgery Tuesday, with the club hoping the recovery fits a roughly two-week window rather than a month-long stay on injured reserve.

The timeline matters because Dallas hosts the Washington Commanders on Sunday at AT&T Stadium and then faces the Baltimore Ravens in Week 3 in Rio de Janeiro. Keeping Hooker off IR preserves roster flexibility if the shorter projection holds. Schottenheimer framed the outlook carefully: the fracture "doesn't require as long a period of time," and the staff is "hoping it's a two-week window."

How Hooker's absence changes the secondary

Hooker left Sunday's 28-20 loss to the New York Giants late in the third quarter after a scramble by quarterback Jaxson Dart, Dallas Sports Journal reported, finishing with one tackle on 12 defensive snaps. That limited workload still removed a veteran presence from a secondary that already had to absorb an early-season injury at running back earlier in the week.

Schottenheimer's Monday answer on first-round pick Caleb Downs was as important as the medical update. Asked whether Downs would slide into more third-level work while Hooker is out, the coach pointed elsewhere. "We love P.J. Locke," Schottenheimer said, per the team's official site. Downs, he added, played well and can move around, but Dallas likes him "down near the line of scrimmage."

That distinction keeps Downs in the slot/near-LOS role the staff valued in Week 1 and assigns Hooker's traditional sub-package snaps to Locke. It is a continuity call: protect the rookie's best traits rather than stretch him into every vacated safety duty.

Two weeks is not the same as healthy

A hoped-for two-week return is not a clearance for Week 2. Forearm fractures that avoid IR still require post-surgery swelling control, strength in the grip and striking hand, and clearance to tackle. The Cowboys' public message is optimistic and short-term, not a guarantee Hooker plays against Washington.

The same Monday briefing covered linebacker DeMarvion Overshown's hamstring strain - also projected in a one-to-two-week range - which compounds the defensive communication load. Hooker's surgery day sits in the middle of a short turnaround week, so the secondary plan has to be practice-ready Wednesday regardless of how clean the operation goes.

New York ran for 165 yards on 37 carries, converted 9 of 11 third downs, and held the ball for 36:40, Dallas Sports Journal noted. Those numbers are not Hooker's alone to fix, but they raise the stakes for Locke's alignment and for Downs staying disruptive closer to the line instead of chasing every deep responsibility.

Washington will bring a different schematic look than the Giants, yet the Cowboys' Week 1 tape already showed how quickly a short-handed back seven can get worn down when third downs fail. Schottenheimer's secondary map - Locke for Hooker's snaps, Downs near the LOS - is the clearest structural answer Dallas has offered so far.

If Hooker's surgery tracks to the shorter end of the window, Dallas could regain him around the Ravens trip. Until then, the safety room's Week 2 identity is Locke's coverage volume and Downs' work near the line, not a wholesale reshuffle of the first-round pick into Hooker's every assignment.
