Council clears the way for a Trader Joe's and senior apartments at Main Street and Majestic Gardens

Frisco shoppers who have been driving to Plano or McKinney for Trader Joe's moved a step closer to having one in town Tuesday night.

The City Council voted unanimously to approve a zoning change for a 9.4-acre tract at the southwest corner of Main Street and Majestic Gardens Drive, according to The Dallas Morning News. The request from developer SNS Frisco West Main Station LLC pairs the grocer with a senior living community.

Council members had opened a public hearing on the case Aug. 18 and then set it aside to give the developer more time to work through staff concerns.

What the plan includes

City planning documents prepared for the meeting put the grocery store on about 3.22 acres at the corner, with the senior community on roughly 6.18 acres to the south, next to existing homes. The staff report lists 158 senior units, all with one or two bedrooms. A grocery store was already permitted on the site; the zoning change was needed for the senior housing.

At staff's request, the project is to be built in a single phase, and the senior housing cannot get a certificate of occupancy until the store does. The Planning and Zoning Commission had recommended approval 5-0 in late July.

What council members said

"When are we getting a Trader Joe's? That has been a resounding question," Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Angelia Pelham said during the meeting, adding that she was glad to finally have an answer, the newspaper reported. Mayor Pro Tem Laura Rummel said she could not wait for the store to open.

No opening date or construction schedule has been announced. Trader Joe's is also looking at new stores in Fort Worth, Plano and Wylie, according to the News.
