The Dallas Cowboys are coming home to Frisco with an unsettled backup quarterback race and two free open practices waiting at Ford Center at The Star.
Joe Milton started Saturday's preseason game at State Farm Stadium in Glendale and produced three first-half touchdowns in a 34-13 win over the Arizona Cardinals, according to the team's official recap and the ESPN box score. Milton completed 9 of 13 passes for 179 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions and a 151.4 passer rating, then scored on a short quarterback draw.
Dallas improved to 2-0 in the exhibition slate while resting most starters.
Coach Brian Schottenheimer made clear that the job behind Dak Prescott is not settled. "This is long from over," Schottenheimer told the Associated Press. "We're going back to Frisco, thankfully, get a chance to be home and put some more training camp days in.
You've got to give Joe his credit, he's played really well the past two games, but we have a lot of confidence in Sam as well."
Open practices at The Star
The club said it will host open practices Tuesday, Aug. 25, and Wednesday, Aug. 26, at Ford Center as part of Training Camp presented by American Airlines. Both sessions are free. Tostitos Championship Plaza opens at 4 p.m., Ford Center doors open at 4:30 p.m., and practice runs 6-8 p.m. both nights.
Tuesday begins with a 5:30 p.m. opening ceremony that includes remarks from owner, president and general manager Jerry Jones, the team said. After practice, the club plans a post-practice tailgate and drone show on the plaza from 8-9 p.m. Wednesday is Cowboys Night, with the practice set for a live broadcast on TXA 21 and team streams.
The exhibition finale is Friday, Aug. 28, against the New Orleans Saints at AT&T Stadium at 7 p.m. CT.
How Milton built the lead
Cornerback Shavon Revel intercepted Gardner Minshew and returned the ball 22 yards to the Arizona 12, ESPN and Cowboys.com showed. Three plays later, Milton rolled left and hit Malik Davis for an 8-yard touchdown. He later threw a 53-yard touchdown to Jonathan Mingo and found Camden Brown for a 70-yard catch-and-run to the 1 before scoring himself on the draw.
Brandon Aubrey added a 50-yard field goal for a 24-6 halftime lead.
Sam Howell played the second half and finished 7 of 10 for 65 yards with an end-zone interception, per ESPN. Phil Mafah ran 15 yards for a fourth-quarter touchdown. Jaydon Blue led rushers with 75 yards on 15 carries. Brown had two catches for 77 yards; Mingo had two for 62 and a score. Dallas totaled 413 yards, including 175 rushing.
