Deciding Moment

James Wood delivered the defining blow of the contest with a grand slam to center field in the fifth inning. The 446-foot home run plated four runs, shifting the momentum decisively in favor of the Washington Nationals. The blast extended the Nationals' lead to 12-6, a margin the Astros would spend the remainder of the game attempting to close. Wood’s power display was the catalyst for a scoring outburst that ultimately secured the 12-11 victory for the home team.

Early Exchange

The game began with back-and-forth action in the first inning. Walker doubled to center field to drive in Paredes, giving the Astros an early 1-0 advantage. However, the Nationals responded immediately in the same frame. Mead doubled to center field to score Wood, tying the game at 1-1.

Houston regained the lead in the second inning when Altuve homered to left field, a 372-foot shot that also drove in Shewmake and Matthews. The three-run play gave the visitors a 4-1 lead. The Nationals answered in the third inning with a pair of solo home runs. Diaz launched a 389-foot homer to left to score Smith, cutting the deficit to 4-2. Diaz followed up with another run, making it 6-1 before García Jr. doubled to left to score Nuñez, bringing the score to 6-2. Mead then singled to left to score Wood, making it 6-3.

Offensive Surge

The Nationals’ offense exploded in the third inning. Abrams homered to right field, a 392-foot drive that scored both García Jr. and Mead, tying the game at 6-6. The Astros struck back in the fifth inning. Mead homered to left center, a 404-foot shot, to make it 6-7. Millas followed with a sacrifice fly to left to score Abrams, extending Houston’s lead to 8-6.

The turning point arrived moments later when Wood’s grand slam pushed the Nationals ahead 12-6. The Astros began their comeback in the sixth inning. Shewmake grounded into a double play, but Smith scored to make it 7-12. In the eighth inning, Shewmake doubled to right to score Wade Jr., bringing the score to 8-12. Matthews then homered to left, a 363-foot shot that scored both Diaz and Shewmake, narrowing the gap to 11-12.

Pitching Performances

Miles Mikolas earned the win for Washington, pitching six innings and allowing seven earned runs on nine hits. He was supported by Cole Henry, who pitched 1.2 innings, and Clayton Beeter, who recorded the save with 1.1 scoreless innings. For Houston, Mike Burrows took the loss after pitching 4.1 innings and allowing seven earned runs. AJ Blubaugh, Nate Pearson, and Enyel De Los Santos pitched the remaining relief innings for the Astros.

The final score leaves the Washington Nationals with a 47-45 record and the Houston Astros at 45-48.
