Advocates from the Frisco Triathlon Club met with State Rep. Jared Patterson at his Frisco office to demand stricter bicycle safety regulations. The push follows a series of fatal incidents, including a crash in Pilot Point where a 23-year-old driver, who was speeding and unlicensed, struck cyclists from behind before briefly fleeing the scene. Two additional bicyclists died in separate motorist-involved crashes in McKinney and Richardson in the months that followed.
During the meeting, the group outlined specific legislative goals, including expanding dedicated bike infrastructure, mandating a three-foot passing distance for vehicles, and preventing drivers involved in collisions from refusing chemical testing. Club member Beckley described the Pilot Point incident as a needless tragedy and emphasized the need for regulations with real enforcement power.
Beckley noted that Patterson appeared responsive and empathetic to the group’s concerns. While acknowledging that legislative changes take time and may not occur in a single session, the advocates remain hopeful that their proposals will gain traction in the upcoming session.
