A Collin County jury convicted 19-year-old Karmelo Anthony of murder and sentenced him to 35 years in prison for the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf at a Frisco track meet. Anthony, who attended Centennial High School, faced a potential range of two years to life imprisonment.
During the trial, which began jury selection on June 1, witnesses described Anthony entering a tent belonging to Memorial High School students. Some testified that he provoked a confrontation before being pushed, while others stated he initiated the conflict. Prosecutor Bill Wirskye argued Anthony started the altercation and used excessive force, whereas defense attorney Mike Howard claimed Anthony acted in self-defense during a chaotic moment.
Metcalf’s parents addressed Anthony during sentencing, with his mother Meghan stating she had been sentenced to a life without her son. Anthony has consistently maintained he acted in self-defense. The case drew significant public attention and resulted in a gag order for those involved in the proceedings.
