Frisco defeated Carrollton Newman Smith 47-14 in its season opener on Thursday at Tommy Standridge Stadium. The win marks the beginning of the high school football schedule for both Class 5A programs.
Senior receiver Lowery Asel was the standout performer, scoring four times. He opened the game with an 83-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Following a safety by the Frisco defense, Asel added another score on a 46-yard free kick return. These early plays helped establish a 16-0 advantage just over four minutes into the contest.
Asel also contributed significantly through the air and on special teams. He caught three passes for 83 yards and two touchdowns, rushed for 24 yards, converted six extra points, and kicked a 28-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. In total, he accounted for 14 of Frisco’s 16 first-quarter points.
Senior quarterback Brenden Bounds made his first varsity start, completing eight of twelve passes for 182 yards and throwing four touchdown passes. His connections included a seven-yard pass to Asel, a 50-yard strike to senior receiver DiAngelo Hale, and a 30-yard score to Asel later in the half. Bounds also threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Kason Cowan in the third quarter.
Newman Smith managed to score twice. Junior Ryan Robertson broke loose for a 79-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter, cutting the deficit to 16-6. Senior Franco Fuentes added an 11-yard rushing touchdown with 1:54 remaining, followed by a successful two-point conversion.
