Frisco Centennial tennis is pursuing a fourth consecutive Class 5A state championship after opening its District 11-5A campaign with a 4-0 record. The Titans secured a 13-6 victory over No. 1-ranked Frisco Independence, a match that head coach Douglas Fair described as a validation of the team's ability to compete with top-tier opponents.
Centennial has won the state title in each of the last three seasons, compiling a combined record of 59-9 during that span.
The team’s recent success has been built on a foundation of high expectations, according to Fair. He noted that both returning seniors and new players understand the program’s standards, a culture established by previous championship teams. In the match against Independence, Centennial built a 6-1 lead in doubles play to take control of the contest.
The Titans have integrated seven new starters this season, including Ishan Huria, Veda Reddy, and Josephine Fair, alongside a core of returners led by senior Rohan Sheth. Fair praised Sheth’s development from a freshman in lower lines to a top-tier player, citing his consistent work ethic and talent.
The district presents a significant challenge, as six other teams in District 11-5A hold state rankings. The Texas Tennis Coaches Association preseason list includes nine Frisco ISD programs, with Centennial ranked No. 5.
Other ranked teams in the district include Independence at No. 1, Frisco at No. 4, Lebanon Trail at No. 7, Emerson at No. 9, Reedy at No. 11, Heritage at No. 12, and Liberty at No. 16. Fair believes that navigating this competitive district prepares the team for the pressure of state playoffs, potentially offering an advantage over teams with easier district schedules.
