Eric Morris has been appointed the head football coach at Oklahoma State University, replacing Mike Gundy, who concluded a 21-year tenure with the Cowboys after the 2025 season. Gundy was dismissed on September 23, 2025, following a 1-2 start to the campaign and a 3-9 overall record with a winless conference performance in 2024. His final two seasons ended with a 4-11 record.
Morris arrives in Stillwater from North Texas, where he spent three seasons as head coach. During his time in Denton, he compiled a 22-16 record, highlighted by an 11-2 season in 2025. The 40-year-old previously served as head coach at Incarnate Word from 2018 to 2021 and held staff positions at Houston and Texas Tech. His most recent prior role in a major conference was as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Washington State.
Morris acknowledged the challenge of succeeding Gundy, who finished with a 170-90 record and remains the program’s winningest coach. Morris stated he intends to establish his own culture while expressing respect for Gundy’s legacy. He noted that Stillwater’s community and family-friendly environment were significant factors in his decision to join the program.
Regarding the Big 12 Conference, Morris observed a shift in playing style compared to his previous experience in the league in 2017. He described the current conference as more condensed, with an emphasis on possession games, defense, and increased use of tight ends, rather than the high-scoring, pass-heavy offenses of the past. He expressed optimism about the league’s parity and Oklahoma State’s prospects in his first year.
