The District 5-5A Division I opening round for both programs begins Friday night at Coach Kenny Deel Stadium in Melissa. Undefeated Frisco Lone Star travels to take on the home Cardinals in one of the newest premier venues for Texas high school football.
Lone Star enters the contest ranked seventh in the High School On SI Texas statewide Top 25 rankings. The Rangers advanced to the 5A Division I state championship game last season and return with significant talent, including quarterback Trey Wright, who has committed to play college football at USC.
Wright has thrown for over 800 yards and nine touchdowns this year while adding 300 rushing yards and five scores. The Rangers have won their first three games by margins of 41, 48, and 56 points against Royse City, Cedar Hill, and Simon Gratz from Philadelphia.
Melissa starts the campaign with a 1-2 record after a 63-21 victory over Pulaski Academy of Arkansas followed by losses to Denton Guyer and Rockwell. The Cardinals finished 11-3 last season and reached the 5A Division II state semifinals. Running back Jeremiah Tabor leads their offense with nearly 400 rushing yards and six touchdowns.
