Frisco Mayor Mark Hill attended a Bonalu festival on Sunday, August 2, joining members of the city’s Telugu community for a Hindu observance connected to Telangana, India.
The festival honors the goddess Mahankali. The report said hundreds of people attended the Frisco event, where Telugu was used in parts of the program, including music, announcements and videos. The event’s Instagram page also said portions of the celebration were conducted in Telugu.
Activities included food offerings placed before statues of Hindu deities. The report said many participants waited to take photos and pay respect at the displays. It also noted many Hindu religious flags at the event and said two American flags were visible.
The celebration came during a month in which two Indian cultural events in Frisco highlighted the city’s Indian American community. Frisco’s 2026 demographic report estimates the city’s population at 245,470. The report lists residents as 45.5% white, 33.6% Asian, 10% Black or African American, 8.7% two or more races, 2% another race, 0.1% American Indian and 0% Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander.
It separately lists 10.4% of residents as Hispanic of any race.
The article also said local employers have received thousands of H-1B visa approvals in recent years. It reported that one X user, Scott Hutson, posted a comment opposing the event and telling participants to leave. Organizers and staff declined to comment when approached during the event, according to the report.
