Frisco residents will vote Saturday to select the city’s next mayor, marking the first mayoral contest in nine years. Incumbent Jeff Cheney, who held the office for nine years, is term-limited and cannot seek re-election.
The runoff features former Frisco ISD board trustee Mark Hill and retired construction business owner Rod Vilhauer. Both defeated two former City Council members in the May 2 general election. Hill secured approximately 35% of the vote, while Vilhauer received about 32%.
The race has drawn more than $1 million in campaign spending over the past 15 months, targeting Frisco’s roughly 140,000 registered voters. The election coincides with public debates over diversity in the community. Notably, the winner will not have prior City Council experience, a departure from the last five mayors who all served on the council before taking office. Frisco’s population has grown approximately 40% since the last open mayoral seat in 2017.
