University of Houston football player Carmello Brooks appeared in court Monday on two separate criminal charges, including an allegation involving the assault of a pregnant person. Nariah Harley, the woman connected to that case, told the judge she wants prosecutors to dismiss the charge and said police did not accurately understand the incident.
Harley said an argument took place inside Brooks’ apartment last week. She told the court that Brooks repeatedly asked her to leave, then lifted her and placed her outside after she refused. Harley also said Brooks contacted police himself because she would not leave the apartment.
Brooks’ attorney, Brent Wasserstein, said the encounter was captured by officers’ body cameras. He told the court that prosecutors plan to examine that footage and the 911 call made by Brooks. Harley said Brooks is the father of her baby and that she does not view herself as a victim.
She asked that all charges be dropped so both of them could move forward with their lives.
The second case involves an August incident in northwest Harris County. Brooks is accused of damaging a door handle after a dispute involving another woman and her sister, leading to a criminal mischief charge. Family members said Brooks and those women grew up together in Killeen and attended high school together. Harley also is from Killeen and attends Texas Southern University.
