The Dallas Cowboys released running back Israel Abanikanda and added Tyler Goodson from the Atlanta Falcons after a 69-yard rushing performance against the New York Giants in Week 1.
Abanikanda’s departure creates room for Goodson on the Cowboys’ roster. Abanikanda played in six NFL games before the move, all with the New York Jets during the 2023 season.
The former Pitt running back had a strong 2022 college season, carrying the ball 239 times for 1,431 yards and 20 touchdowns. He did not establish a regular role during his NFL career before Dallas released him.
Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said the Giants’ defensive front disrupted the running game early. He said Dallas faced too much penetration and that the team was physically outplayed at the line of scrimmage. Schottenheimer also said Javonte Williams had difficulty finding running room at the start of the game, though Dallas made adjustments after halftime.
