Baylor quarterback DJ Lagway is unlikely to play against Louisiana Tech as he continues recovering from an ankle injury, but reports indicate he is moving toward a possible return for the Bears' Big 12 opener against Colorado on Sept. 26.
Lagway injured his ankle during Baylor's 17-16 loss to Auburn in the season opener. He stayed in the game and finished with 333 passing yards, two touchdown passes and one interception. A wrap was visible on his ankle after the injury.
The injury kept Lagway out of Baylor's next game against Prairie View A&M. Nate Bennett started in his place and completed 24 of 36 attempts for 314 yards in a 44-3 Baylor victory. Bennett also accounted for three touchdowns through the air and one rushing score.
Lagway is considered doubtful for Saturday's game against Louisiana Tech, which could give Bennett his second straight start. Baylor coach Dave Aranda recently said Lagway felt good during a Sunday practice, and the quarterback was expected to work with the team during the week.
On3 reporter Pete Nakos reported that Lagway is expected to be ready for the Colorado matchup. Baylor is taking a cautious approach while monitoring his progress, and the Bears are scheduled to play Louisiana Tech before beginning Big 12 competition. Colorado is scheduled to face Northwestern before traveling to Baylor.
