The New England Patriots made a significant roster move by trading wide receiver Kayshon Boutte to the Houston Texans on Monday. In exchange, the Patriots received Jaylen Reed and a seventh-round draft pick in 2028.
Boutte, who is 24 years old, found himself in a crowded receiving corps after the Patriots signed AJ Brown and Romeo Doubs. Other receivers on the team include DeMario Douglas, Mack Hollins, Kyle Williams, and Efton Chism, which limited Boutte's opportunities.
Head coach Mike Vrabel explained that the trade was beneficial for Boutte, allowing him a better chance to contribute with the Texans rather than remaining inactive in New England. Vrabel noted, "That was one place (wide receiver) where we do have some depth, and I think for all parties involved, that was probably the best thing."
Without injuries to other players, Boutte would have likely remained inactive during games, primarily due to his lack of special teams play. Last season, he appeared in 14 games, recording 33 receptions for 551 yards and achieving a career-high six touchdowns.
Vrabel expressed that the decision to trade Boutte was challenging due to his positive attitude and growth as a player. He emphasized the importance of acknowledging Boutte's contributions and maturity, stating, "I tried to thank Kayshon as many times as I could."
