Texas Comptroller's Office Announces Tax Holiday for Back-to-School Shopping

Frisco shoppers will have the opportunity to save on essential back-to-school items during Texas' annual tax-free weekend. Scheduled from August 7 through August 9, 2026, this event allows for exemptions from state and local sales tax, which can total up to 8.25 percent.

Eligible items include most clothing and footwear priced under $100 per item, student backpacks (up to 10 per purchase), and a specific list of school supplies, all under $100 each. The tax exemption applies to purchases made in Texas stores or online from Texas-based sellers.

However, certain items are not included in the tax exemption, such as jewelry, handbags, watches, computers, and clothing designed primarily for athletic or protective use. Additionally, rentals and alteration or cleaning services are excluded from the tax-free weekend.

Shoppers will not need any coupons or exemption certificates, as the discount will be applied automatically at checkout for qualifying items. A complete list of eligible products can be found on the Texas Comptroller's website.
