Frisco's parks department is folding two of its yearly nature events into one this weekend. Bison & Blossoms, billed by the city as Frisco's Arbor Day celebration, takes the place of the former ArborFest and Buffalo Stomp and runs from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, at Frisco Commons Park, 8000 McKinney Road.

Everything happens near the park's splash pad, and the city says the event goes on rain or shine. It is free and pitched for all ages and abilities.

The schedule

  • 9 a.m.: Arbor Day welcome, the reading of a proclamation and a giveaway of saplings.
  • 9:30 a.m.: Live animal demonstrations and educational tables.
  • 10:15 a.m.: A guided tree tour and the seed stomp.

The seed stomp carries over from the Buffalo Stomp: participants press native wildflower and grass seed into the ground with their feet. Residents can also help put a new tree in the ground alongside members of the Frisco Garden Club and City Council, and follow a guide along a forested stretch of trail.

The city describes the morning as a way to draw attention to Frisco's urban forest and to conservation of the Blackland Prairie, the tallgrass ecosystem that once covered much of North Texas.

Members of the city's Natural Resources Advisory Board may attend. A public notice posted Tuesday lists the celebration as the only item for a special board meeting at the park, and it states that no votes or formal action will be taken there.

An event map is posted on the city's Bison & Blossoms page. Questions go to Frisco Parks & Recreation at 972-292-6500.
