The Dallas Stars and Amazon surprised the Brave Like Ellie foundation with a $25,000 donation during an event at Comerica Center in Frisco. The presentation occurred shortly before North Texas Giving Day, providing a significant boost to the charity's fundraising efforts.
The surprise took place while the foundation was recording a promotional video at the arena. Stars players Matt Duchene and Thomas Harley entered the room carrying a large ceremonial check. The donation exceeded the organization's goal for Giving Day by 2.5 times, helping to kick-start their broader $60,000 fundraising target before Christmas.
Duchene explained that he recommended Brave Like Ellie when Amazon asked the team which charity should receive the support. He noted a personal connection to the cause, as his youngest child is named Ellie, mirroring the foundation's namesake. The organization honors Elizabeth Grace (Ellie), who died from acute myeloid leukemia in January 2017 at age three.
It provides Brave Boxes containing toys and comfort items to North Texas families affected by pediatric cancer.
Harley described the moment as special and emphasized the importance of athletes giving back. He stated that the Stars organization is very supportive of these efforts. Duchene added that he views giving back as a responsibility and privilege, noting that his profession allows him to help others in meaningful ways.
