Frisco Lone Star maintained its undefeated record with a 35-30 victory over Melissa in the District 5-5A Division I opener. The game, played at Coach Kenny Deel Stadium, ended with the Rangers holding on for a fourth straight win, improving their overall record to 4-0 and their district standing to 1-0.
Melissa, which entered the contest with a 1-2 record, fell to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in district play.
Quarterback Trey Wright, a committed player for the University of Southern California, was the offensive focal point for the Rangers. He accounted for four touchdowns on the night, including a 75-yard pass to Zach Forbish early in the first quarter and a 69-yard keeper in the second. Wright also connected with Colen Perry for a 58-yard score and Karece Hoyt for a 28-yard touchdown.
Prior to this game, Wright had accumulated over 800 passing yards and nine passing touchdowns, along with 300 rushing yards and five rushing scores.
Melissa quarterback Turner Wilkie kept the Cardinals competitive with three touchdowns. He threw a 40-yard score to Wyatt Harry in the second quarter and a 14-yard pass to Bear Tabor in the third. Wilkie also ran for a 4-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
The Cardinals had previously tied the game at 7-7 in the first quarter after a 14-play drive that ended with a one-yard sneak.
