Closing arguments are underway Tuesday morning in the murder trial of Karmelo Anthony, a 19-year-old accused of fatally stabbing 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a high school track meet in Frisco last year. Both the prosecution and defense have concluded their presentations of evidence.
Prosecutors described the incident as a provoked, unjustified sneak attack inside a team tent at the stadium. The defense countered that the stabbing was a split-second reaction to fear and chaos, arguing self-defense. Defense attorneys rested their case on Monday without calling Anthony to testify.
Following the conclusion of closing arguments, the Collin County jury will be sequestered to deliberate the case. State District Judge John Roach issued warnings to jurors against using social media during the proceedings. If convicted of first-degree murder, Anthony faces a maximum sentence of five to 99 years in prison or life imprisonment.
