As the Dallas Cowboys approach the conclusion of their training camp in Oxnard, the team's strengths and weaknesses are becoming more apparent. The offense, led by quarterback Dak Prescott and featuring top wide receivers CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens, is expected to be a strong point for the team.
However, questions remain regarding the depth of the offensive line. While the starting five players are set, the Cowboys are still determining the best fit for backup positions. Following their first preseason game, adjustments have been made to find the right combinations.
A key area of concern is the backup center position. Initially, veteran Matt Hennessy was slated to step in if starter Cooper Beebe faced any issues, but Hennessy has since been placed on season-ending injured reserve due to a neck injury. This has created a significant gap in the offensive line's depth.
In response, the Cowboys have turned to T.J. Bass as the primary backup center, despite his lack of experience at that position. Bass, who is regarded as the best backup offensive lineman on the roster, has primarily played guard and has been a valuable asset, starting in 10 games over the past three seasons.
The team recognized his potential by offering him a second-round tender in the offseason, which guarantees him a salary of $5.76 million.
During the first preseason game, Bass started at center for two series before being replaced by veteran Nick Leverett. Leverett, who was signed to the practice squad last November and later secured a futures contract, has more experience at guard but has one career start at center, which occurred in 2024.
After the preseason victory, Leverett was observed working extensively as the backup center, while Bass returned to guard during practice. This shift indicates that the Cowboys are considering Leverett as a viable option for the backup center role.
