The SMU Mustangs are looking to enhance their wide receiver lineup with the addition of transfers Jalen Hale from Alabama and Yannick Smith from East Carolina. This move follows the graduation of their top two receivers, Jordan Hudson and Romello Brinson, who collectively recorded over 1,400 receiving yards and nine touchdowns last season.

In Frisco, Texas, the team is addressing challenges as quarterback Kevin Jennings recovers from a hand injury, limiting his ability to work with key offensive players. Redshirt freshman quarterback Ty Hawkins has stepped in and noted Smith's skill in making contested catches, while highlighting Hale's speed and agility.

Hale, a former five-star recruit, is bouncing back from a significant knee injury that kept him sidelined for the entire 2024 season.

Wide receivers coach Rob Likens has praised Hale's SEC experience and toughness, which he believes will enhance the team's offensive strategy. Smith, boasting over 1,000 receiving yards and eight touchdowns from his previous stint, is recognized for his aggressive playing style.

Senior Yamir Knight is also returning after a standout performance in the Holiday Bowl, and sophomore Jalen Cooper is expected to take on a more significant role this season.

With about two weeks remaining in fall camp, the Mustangs are concentrating on developing their team dynamics and depth chart. Cornerbacks coach Kyle Ward has commented on the competitive spirit brought by Hale and Smith, indicating their impact on the overall performance of the team and the potential for a strong passing game.
